Bleeding is a reason to review gum health
Gums that bleed when you brush or clean between teeth may be inflamed by plaque. Brushing too firmly, irritation from a dental appliance or medication can also contribute. Repeated bleeding should not simply be accepted as normal. Tell us whether it is localised or affects several teeth, and whether you have soreness, bad breath or loose teeth. If bleeding is heavy or cannot be controlled, seek urgent help.

Gingivitis affects the gum tissue and can improve when plaque is controlled. Periodontitis affects the supporting tissues and bone and needs a more detailed plan. Your dentist assesses bleeding, pocket depths and tooth support, with imaging where appropriate. Swollen or tender gums may occur alongside bleeding. Smoking can hide some signs of gum inflammation, so a lack of bleeding does not always mean the gums are healthy.

Treatment can include professional removal of plaque and hardened deposits, advice on daily cleaning, and a programme of periodontal care. Our on-site specialist periodontist can help with more complex gum conditions. If a damaged or poorly fitting denture is rubbing the gum, its fit also needs attention. Medicines are reviewed as part of the assessment, but you should not stop prescribed blood thinners without advice from the clinician who manages them.

Continue gentle twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste instead of avoiding areas that bleed. Your team can show you suitable interdental brushes or flossing techniques. Mouthwash is not a substitute for removing plaque and should be used only as advised. Stopping smoking and attending maintenance visits can support gum health. Where advanced disease leaves a tooth very loose, tooth removal may be discussed, but prevention and preservation remain central to the care plan.
