When a denture cracks or breaks
A damaged denture can make eating and speaking difficult and may rub or cut the mouth. Breakage can follow a drop, repeated flexing or a change in fit as the mouth changes over time. Stop wearing it if it is sharp, unstable or painful, and keep every piece. Call us to arrange assessment. Do not try a household glue repair: it can be harmful and can make a professional repair more difficult.

We examine the denture and the tissues it rests on, not just the broken area. A crack may be related to uneven pressure or a poor fit, so joining it without addressing the cause may lead to another break. Tell us how long you have had it and whether it was loose beforehand. Sore or swollen gums and bleeding around supporting teeth also need attention when planning a comfortable solution.

Depending on the material and extent of damage, options may include laboratory repair, replacing a missing denture tooth, relining or making a new denture. Turnaround varies with the work needed and laboratory availability, so we cannot promise every repair on the same day. If a natural supporting tooth has fractured, broken tooth treatment may be needed as well. We explain what is practical and agree the cost before proceeding.

Handle your denture over a towel or basin of water to cushion a drop. Clean it with suitable denture products and a soft brush; avoid hot water and abrasive household cleaners. Remove it at night unless your dentist advises otherwise, and follow storage instructions for its material. A denture should not require force to fit. Attend reviews if pressure spots develop. When remaining teeth need extraction, the denture plan may also need to change.
