Swelling can have different causes
A swollen gum may result from plaque-related inflammation, trapped food, a tooth infection or irritation around an erupting wisdom tooth. The cause cannot be identified reliably from appearance alone. A tender lump, bad taste or worsening pain needs prompt assessment. If swelling spreads to the face, you feel unwell or have a fever, contact us urgently. Breathing or swallowing difficulty needs emergency medical care rather than waiting for a dental appointment.

We examine the teeth and gums and may take an X-ray to distinguish a tooth-root problem from a periodontal problem. Tell us how quickly the swelling developed and whether it comes and goes. A history of throbbing dental pain may suggest a tooth-related cause, while bleeding gums and gum pockets may indicate periodontal disease. Both can occur together, so the assessment considers the whole area, not just the visible lump.

Treatment may include cleaning the affected area, drainage when needed, or care for the tooth responsible. Root canal treatment can address infection inside a restorable tooth; extraction may be considered when it cannot be retained. Antibiotics are reserved for appropriate clinical situations, such as spreading infection, and do not replace local dental treatment. Our on-site endodontist, periodontist and oral surgeon support assessment of complex emergencies without assuming every swelling needs the same approach.

Do not squeeze, pierce or try to drain a swollen gum yourself. Keep the area gently clean and follow your dentist’s instructions. Swelling should be monitored after treatment, and you should contact us if it grows, symptoms worsen or you develop a fever. If medication is prescribed, use it exactly as directed. Return for definitive treatment and review, even if a temporary measure relieves pressure. Regular gum care and early repair of decay can reduce future problems.
