Emergency Toothache Treatment in Esher

Understanding dental pain

A toothache may be a brief twinge with cold drinks, a dull ache around the jaw, or throbbing pain that interrupts sleep. The pattern matters, but pain alone cannot identify the cause. Decay, a leaking filling, a crack and inflammation inside the tooth can feel similar. Tell us when it began, what triggers it and whether it wakes you at night. We will examine the tooth rather than assume that every painful tooth needs the same treatment.

Finding the source

Your dentist checks the tooth, nearby gums and bite, and may test its response to temperature or gentle pressure. An X-ray helps show decay or changes around the roots when clinically appropriate. Pain on biting may relate to a cracked tooth, while a missing restoration may need lost filling replacement. Tenderness with a bad taste or swelling can suggest infection. If pain seems to move between teeth, explaining this helps us narrow down the source.

Options to relieve the problem

The next step depends on what we find. A protective filling may help an exposed cavity; an inflamed or infected nerve may need root canal treatment. A tooth that cannot be restored may require careful tooth removal, but we discuss ways to retain it first. Antibiotics are not a routine treatment for toothache and do not repair decay. They are used only when clinical findings justify them, for example signs of spreading infection.

Looking after the tooth long term

Pain settling does not always mean the cause has disappeared. Complete any recommended treatment and arrange review if symptoms return. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth and reduce how often you have sugary snacks or drinks. If clenching or grinding is contributing to discomfort, your dentist can discuss bite protection. For gum swelling or a dental abscess, seek prompt advice rather than relying on repeated pain relief.
