An exposed cavity needs protection
A filling falling out may leave a gap, a sharp edge or sensitivity when eating and drinking. It can happen as an old restoration wears, after biting hard food, or when decay weakens the tooth around it. Even if it does not hurt, the area can trap food and lose further tooth structure. Arrange a check rather than waiting for dental pain to develop. Keep any recovered piece to show the dentist if practical.

We check the remaining tooth, the edges of the cavity and your bite. An X-ray may be needed to assess hidden decay or the depth of the problem. Tell us whether the filling came out whole or with a piece of tooth. A fractured tooth around a filling can need a different restoration from a straightforward lost filling. Sensitivity that lingers after hot or cold drinks can indicate that the pulp needs closer assessment.

A new filling may be possible once the cavity has been cleaned and assessed. A temporary filling can protect the tooth when more treatment or time is needed. If little sound tooth remains, an onlay or crown may be considered. Deep decay affecting the nerve may require root canal treatment before restoration. A tooth beyond repair may need removal, but this is discussed only after considering whether it can be retained.

While waiting, gently brush around the cavity and avoid chewing hard or sticky food on that side. A pharmacy temporary filling product is not a permanent repair; ask for advice and follow its instructions if recommended. Never use household adhesive. After restoration, daily fluoride brushing and cleaning between teeth help protect the margins from decay. Routine reviews also allow worn fillings or loose crowns to be assessed before they fail unexpectedly.
