Lost Crown Emergency Treatment in Esher

If a crown becomes loose

A wobbly crown or one that comes away can leave the underlying tooth exposed and sensitive. Sometimes the cement has weakened; sometimes decay or a fracture has changed the tooth beneath it. A crown coming off does not automatically mean that it can simply be put back. Keep the crown safe and contact us for assessment. If the tooth has also broken, our broken tooth advice explains why the remaining structure needs checking.

Assessing the crown and tooth

Bring the crown in a clean container so the dentist can inspect it alongside the tooth. We look for decay, damage to the core, inflammation and changes in your bite. An X-ray may help us understand the condition of the root and surrounding tissues. Mention any pain or lingering sensitivity, and whether the crown moved before it fell off. These details help distinguish a cement problem from a deeper issue.

Re-cementing or replacing it

An intact crown may be cleaned and re-cemented if it still fits and the supporting tooth is sound. If it cannot be reused, a temporary restoration may protect the tooth while a replacement is planned. Decay or a damaged core may need treatment first. If the nerve is affected, endodontic assessment may be appropriate. We will explain the options rather than force an old crown onto a tooth that no longer supports it safely.

Keeping the exposed tooth safe

Avoid chewing on the uncovered tooth and keep the area clean with gentle brushing. Do not use superglue or other household adhesives, and do not force a loose crown back into place. Contact us for advice about any temporary dental product before using it. After treatment, attend recommended checks and let us know if the crown feels loose or your bite changes. Similar precautions apply when you have a lost filling.
